21st Century COE Program : Mathematics of Nonlinear Structure via Singularity

Project Outline

Our proposed program, "Mathematics of Nonlinear Structure via Singularity" has been selected as one of the priority projects for the Ministry of Education and Science's "21st Century COE (Center of Excellence) Program" in the "Mathematics, Physics and Geosciences" category. To develop a solid research architecture around mathematics, we, at the Department of Mathematics, Hokkaido University, will work closely with the Earth and Planetary Materials Sciences Department of the Graduate School of Science, the Research Institute for Electronic Science, and the Center for Research and Development in Higher Education.

By focusing on nonlinear structure, a common notion in mathematics and other relevant disciplines, our program aims to further advance research in:

  • Mathematical Analysis
  • Contact Geometry
  • Singularity Analysis
  • Theory of Representations
  • Dynamical System
  • Group Theory
  • Functional Analysis
  • Theory of Operator Algebra

We also commit ourselves to developing new approaches to surrounding areas of science such as mathematical physics, mathematical biology, crystal growth, image processing, meteorology, dissipative structure, and fault identification with particular reference to the notion of singularity.
