COE Tokyo office has been established as a base for COE activities in Tokyo. Former
director of CMIL, Professor Giga, is director of the COE office at University of Tokyo.

Prof. Chan, Dean of the Department of Mathematical Physics at UCLA and Prof. Okada,
Dean of the Graduate School of Science at Hokkaido University, signed a joint community
agreement.

Dr. Mamoru Mohri, Astronaut and Director of National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, visited our COE.
Dr. Mohri is a member of Advisory Board of Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University.
Dr. Mohri discussed with Prof. Ozawa, COE Program Leader, how research should be carried out in Mathematics, what is the right status of Mathematics in Japanese governmental policy on science and technology, and future plans of our COE.

Our activities in the COE project were featured in an article in the April 2004 issue of
Mathematical Seminar (pages 65-69), a publication of Nippon Hyoronsha Co.

Agreement with the Institute of Mathematics, Fudan University
Prof. Hong, The Director of the Institute of Mathematics, Fudan University and Prof. Okada, Dean of the Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University have agreed to build cooperative relations between the two institutions with the main purpose of the promoting joint projects in the areas of mathematics research, academics and cultural exchanges through the mutual collaboration in the fields of education and study.

COE interim report at the 2nd meeting of the advisory commission of the
Graduate School of Science
On December 16, 2003, an interim progress report on our COE project was presented
by the project leader, Professor Ozawa, at the 2nd meeting of the
advisory commission of the Graduate School of Science.
Prof. Ozawa outlined what the COE project has achieved, the challenges it faces,
and the breakthroughs it expects to make.
A brief question and answer session followed.

The 6th Joint Symposium between Seoul National University-Hokkaido
University
-The Brain Korea 21 and Center of Excellence Programs-
The symposium was held at Seoul University, Korea. A total of 10 representatives participated from our COE program, "Mathematics of Non-Linear Structure via Sigularity," at Hokkaido University, including faculty, COE post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students.

Prof. S. Janeczko, director of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Science, Poland, visited Prof. Okada, dean of the Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University. The two signed an inter-departmental exchange agreement between the two institutions.
