Discussion with a deputy director general of NISTEP

Terutaka Kuwahara, a deputy director general of National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP), visited Hokkaido University on June 17 to lecture on “The present situation of science and technology and its possible research directions in Japan - toward the third science and technology basic plans in Japan”.

Discussion meeting between members of COE Organizing Committee and Mr. Kuwahara, chaired by Ichiro Tsuda, a professor of Department of Mathematics and director of Mathematical Center for Advanced Study (MCAS), was held after the lecture. As the main topics of the meeting, the present situation of mathematics and its related research fields in Japan and future directions were discussed for more than an hour at the meeting.
